 Elgin National Watch Company was founded in 1864 in Elgin, Illinois , USA. Originally incorporated as the National Watch Company , it became popularly known as "Elgin" because of its location, and officially adopted the name Elgin National Watch Company later.

It was originally established as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute , and the name "Citizen" was registered by the company in 1924 , the same year they produced their first pocket watch named Citizen . The company officially became Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. in 1930 .
