World War II (1941–1945) – The Golden Era

Hamilton became one of the primary U.S. military watch manufacturers.

 Civilian production stopped

  • In 1942, Hamilton halted all consumer watch production
  • Focused entirely on the war effort

What they produced:

  • Military wristwatches (Army & Navy)
  • Marine chronometers (extremely precise naval navigation clocks)
  • Deck watches
  • Aircraft cockpit clocks

 Famous WWII Models

A-11 (1940s)

  • Known as “the watch that won the war”
  • Issued to Army, Navy, and Air Forces
  • Simple, highly legible:
    • Black dial
    • Arabic numerals
    • Sub-seconds
  • Also produced by Elgin and Waltham

Marine Chronometers

  • Used for naval navigation
  • Exceptionally accurate (essential before GPS)
  • Hamilton became one of the top U.S. chronometer makers
